DCC Educational Foundation funds new health sciences equipment

The dental assisting and certified nurse aide programs at Danville Community College have new, state-of-the-art equipment for the 2022-23 academic year, thanks to the DCC Educational Foundation and its donors.

The purchase included two blood pressure simulators, complete with a speaker system, for the incoming CNA class of 20 students, which began on Aug. 22. The two blood pressure simulators were purchased from Pocket Nurse for $3,500.   

Also purchased as part of the equipment donation were two simulation mannequins with opaque jaws on disconnect trays, complete with sliding clamp assembly. These chair-mounted mannequins were purchased through Columbia Dentoform Corp. for $4,300. The incoming dental assisting cohort has 12 students.

Danville Community College holds job fairs for faculty

Danville Community College is recruiting new faculty members across a variety of subjects and disciplines and will be hosting faculty job fairs across the region in September.

“As we expand our course offerings and improve access to in-person classes, we are looking to add new members to our team of talented faculty members,” Jerry Wallace, president of Danville Community College, said in a statement. “We have positions for individuals who are looking for full-time employment, as well as those who may want to teach one or two classes in addition to their day job.” 

Faculty job fairs will be held at the student center on the Danville campus Sept. 20, in South Boston at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center on Sept. 22 and at the Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center in Chatham on Sept. 27. Each event will last from 4-6 p.m.  

Anyone who is interested in the various teaching roles available at DCC should come prepared to answer questions about their employment history and with copies of their resumes.

UVA Wise hosts community drag show at its Fourth Annual Pride Week

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is holding a series of Pride activities, panels and events this week.

For the first time, the college is hosting a Pride Week drag show. It’s free to the public and will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Black Box Theater in the Gilliam Center for the Arts. 

Miss Tri-Pride Sya Cox O’Hara will host the show, which will feature Anna Tomical, Austin Rayne and Vandeja Voo. A question-and-answer panel will immediately follow the show.

Wytheville Community College to hold alumni picnic in Carroll County

The Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation will celebrate WCC’s alumni and friends of the college at a picnic from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 16.

The event is open to all alumni and friends of the college, with an emphasis on those from Carroll County. Recent high school graduates and future WCC students are also invited to attend. The picnic will be held at the Carter Pines Picnic Shelter in Hillsville, adjacent to the Carroll County Wellness Center near the U.S. 58-U.S. 221 intersection.

This year’s picnic will include a free meal, musical entertainment and door prizes. New River Line Band will perform traditional American music with an emphasis on old time and bluegrass tunes. 

Dean Sprinkle, WCC president, will be on site to welcome guests and provide an update on the college. Other college administrators, faculty, staff and board members will also be in attendance.
